Analyzations of Emily Dickinson’s Poems Essay

Emily Dickinson wrote multiple poems describing objects without ever saying the object’s names. A few examples would be her poems â€Å"Leaden Sieves,† â€Å"A Narrow Fellow in the Grass,† and â€Å"Route of Evanescence.† These poems are similar to a riddle. In order to determine what her poem is about one must analyze the poems to identify what the object is by observing how appropriate the description is and how effective the language is in conveying the essence of the object. The first poem, â€Å"Leaden Sieves,† is about snow. The description and language was very clear to understand in this particular poem. Line 2 read, â€Å"It powders all the Wood.† Powder is white. The word â€Å"powder† also suggests that the object gently covers something. More details that lead the reader to believe that the poem could potentially be about snow fall in the following lines, â€Å"It reaches to the Fence/It wraps it Rail by Rail/Till it is lost in Fleeces† (9-11). These lines suggest that snow is covering the fence and its’ rails. â€Å"Till it is lost in Fleeces† is again suggesting that the object is white. Fleece is the coat of a lamb which is white. Lines 14-15 say, â€Å"A Summer’s empty room/Acres of Joints, where Harvests were.† These lines give the impression that it is the winter season. â€Å"A Summer’s empty room,† meaning that summer is gone and â€Å"where Harvests were,† imply ing that what used to be growth is now dead. Dickinson’s poem, â€Å"A Narrow Fellow in the Grass,† is about a snake. The description and language was decently clear to understand in this poem. A reader can easily determine it is some type of creature that resides on the ground, but it is not very clear as to whether it is a snake or maybe a worm. When line 6 stated, â€Å"a spotted Shaft†¦Ã¢â‚¬  this gave assurance that a snake would be the more correct option since snakes can be spotted. â€Å"A narrow Fellow in the Grass/Occasionally rides/You may have met Him-did you not/His notice sudden is† (1-4). These line imply that it is a creature that slithers on the ground, and also that it moves fast because it can happen a upon a person at a â€Å"sudden† instant. Also the person in the poem mistook the object for a â€Å"Whip lash† (13) which is a rope. A snake is shaped like a rope. â€Å"Route of Evanescence† is very short poem so it’s description is difficult to catch onto. The length of poem plays an important part in the poem’s language though. This poem is about a hummingbird. Line 3 says, â€Å"A Resonance of Emerald† describes the object as possessing a deep, beautiful green color. â€Å"And every Blossom on the Bush/Adjusts it’s tumbled Head† (5-6) suggests flowers that are moving as if perhaps they have just been drank from by a hummingbird. The word â€Å"rush† in line 4 and the short length of the poem implies that the object is something that moves fast and is there and then gone in a blink. The final poem (#585) is about a train. â€Å"I like to see it lap the Miles/And lick the Valleys up† (1-2) suggests not only that the object moves but also that it can cover great distances by using the word â€Å"miles.† Also the object makes some type of noise. The following lines are two examples of the object having the ability to make noise, â€Å"In horrid-hooting stanza† (12) and â€Å"†¦neigh like Boanerges† (14). Lastly. the lines â€Å"The-punctual as a Star/Stop-docile and omnipotent/At its own stable door† (15-17) insinuates something arriving at a destination at a set time like a train does at a depot. Poems can describe objects without saying the object’s names. Readers can determine what the poem is about by analyzing the poems, observing how appropriate the description is, and how effective the language is in conveying the essence of the object. Is man only a written creation greater than in many religious texts, or is man merely another creature that has developed from nature? For example, Newtons theories about gravity was a significant theory that was gaining round at the same time as evolution, and they possi bly gave each other the ability to flourish. Few scientists believe that the theory of evolution explains everything about our creation. In samples isolated for thousands of years, only three of these isotopes remained minimal. Scientific and religious approaches to comprehending reality are deeply complementary. I do not use the word ‘deeply’ for emphasis alone: the qualities that science and religion hold in common are anything but obvious. Viewed on the surface, science and religion often appear to be at odds. Details and dogmas frequently conflict, and misperceptions originating on either side can lead to rejection of the unfamiliar system. At the lofty level of philosophical abstraction, a satisfying reconciliation of science and religion will likely always remain elusive. At the level of personal experience, however, incorporating scientific and religious modes of understanding is not only possible, it is profoundly enriching. The impulses, methods, and themes that define both science and religion are strikingly similar. Curiosity and an insatiable desire to make sense of the world are qualities that are innate to human life; unsurprisingly, these impulses are the driving force behind bot h scientific and religious explorations. The means that facilitate such explorations are fundamentally alike as well: both science and religion are system-driven, with an emphasis on unflagging action in the pursuit of greater understanding. Finally, both scientific and religious modes of understanding inexorably return to a common set of recurrent themes, emphasizing the creativity, dynamism, and unity of the world we perceive. I Learned it From the Movies When the majority of people are asked who or what influenced them most people would likely name one person or one event. Not me. I say the movies. Ever since I was old enough to watch them I have been absorbing the information the movies provided. I was enthralled with the way Clark Gable didn’t give a damn or how Audrey Hepburn knew about the rain on the plains of Spain. The lessons the movies taught me are unforgettable and can be used forever. A big part of the movies were the actors themselves. They each had a certain charisma, a certain flare that made them each special. They all had there own personalities and I learned something from each of them. From Marilyn Monroe, I inherited her glamour, from James Dean, I adopted his poise and his confidence, and from Katherine Hepburn displayed dignity. Those are just a few of the examples, but my point is that I took things I learned from all of my favorite actors and threw them into a blender and swallowed the product. All of these actors were unique by themselves, but they were even better in the movies. The movies had messages and lessons in them that buried themselves in my mind and will stay there for a lifetime. The movies taught me things that no one else ever could. They prepared me for the future. They equipped me with the skills of honesty and perseverance. For example in the film â€Å"Gone With the Wind† Scarlet never gave up. Educational Goals and Philosophy When I first came to Concord, there was no doubt that teaching would be my major. I have always been so inspired by teachers and thought that they put a lot of effort into their work. I can remember the teachers that actually reached me and touched my heart. I'll never forget them or the experience. It is so amazing how many lives a teacher must touch. A teacher has the power to reach out and make learning a memorable experience for every child. My main goal is to be a kindergarten or special education teacher. I love working with young children that don't pick up on things as quickly as the others. I love to watch their eyes light up whenever I help them realize that they can do it, too. Throughout my years of teaching, I hope to be a friend to these children. I want their first year of school to be a memorable one. I'm hoping that they will enjoy being in my class. The children in my classroom that are behind will have me working my hardest to help them catch up. It is a known fact that when young children fall behind in the early years of school, they never catch back up with their peers. That breaks my heart. Every child deserves a fair chance. Each of these students have a variety of background knowledge. Some might not have any because their parents don't work with them. Others might have parents that work with them every night. A teacher has to consider these factors when assessing their ability. The ability and actual knowledge might not balance out. I want the nature of my students to be open-minded and willing to take a chance to learn new things. This involves trust. My students will have to trust me. As I was browsing through catalogues and asking friends and family I’ve learned that there are factors that I have to consider in purchasing a car. I thought it was as easy as buying a chocolate bar at the store. My father had told me that I should consider first my budget. What’s the budget I’ve allotted for my car? It was only then that I had thought about it. It seems that my budget won’t match the car I’ve dreamed of buying.So my father told me to think of the other factors, such as, look for a car that would fit my budget. Next is the quality of the car, like the engine and the body; and lastly are the features of the car. What I did was look through the catalogues and brochures again. Write on a piece of paper the features I like and the kind of engine that fits my lifestyle. On the other side are the features of the cars I’m looking at. Cross out the things that I d on’t like, and left out what I like and the things that match them.It was only then that I was able to choose the car that I’ll be purchasing. But there are three choices left, which I really have to think about and consider. I again consulted my father about it to finalize my decision. He told me to go and check out the cars that are in my list, â€Å"Once you’re there and check them you’ll know which one is for you. † And I did went to check the cars out. Complex Parts, Inc. has been a supplier of specialized parts to Deere & Company for the past 10 years, with annual sales of $3. 5 million. Over the past year the supplier has fallen behind in its ability to satisfy the guidelines outlined in Deere’s Achieving Excellence Program (AEP), a supplier evaluation process that promotes communication, trust, cooperation, and continuous improvement. Due to this decline, one of Deere’s supplier evaluation teams, consisting of four employees, has to make a quick recommendation about the future relationship between Deere & Complex Parts. The Achieving Excellence Program (AEP) evaluates, on a yearly basis, key parts of how a supplier is performing. It focuses on five key areas: quality, delivery, cost management, wavelength and technical support. The program classifies each supplier, from best to worst, as either Partner, Key, Approved or Conditional. AEP effectively assesses the supplier’s commitment to its relationship with Deere in such areas as enhancing communication, lowering costs, and improving design. The biggest drawback to the AEP is that it does not consider the full history of the supplier’s relationship to the company. The evaluation only focuses on the past year and not the historical highs and lows of productivity. The program also does not take into account the current economic conditions and how the market is performing. It examines what the supplier is doing to increase profits for Deere, but does not explore what Deere could be doing to help the supplier, beyond training, plaques and honors. The Achieving Excellence Program is an ideal way to analyze how a supplier is functioning, but it would be beneficial to include an assessment of how or what Deere & Company could do to aid the supplier. Using the AEP evaluation, it is difficult to determine how Complex Parts has performed over the past year. While the supplier has done extremely well, it has also done very poorly, resulting in an adequate performance. Overall, the supplier has performed well, achieving a quality rating of 666 and a delivery rating of 8650, both well below the ideal for a Partner classification.
